What is an MOT?

If your vehicle is older than 3 years you are required by the law to have an MOT test. An MOT is a safety check carried out annually to ensure your vehicle meets the minimum standards for safety and roadworthiness. The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency are responsible for approving MOT test centres and MOT testers. Make sure you check all your lights and tyres before your MOT, so your vehicle doesn't fail for an easily fixable reason. If your annual MOT is due, make sure you arrange an MOT test as soon as possible.

What is Included in an MOT Test?

An MOT test checks various parts of your vehicle, to ensure road safety and worthiness. These checks range from the mechanical parts of your vehicle to safety features such as seat belts. The following, while not a full list, can give you an idea of what is checked during your MOT:

  • Body or vehicle structure and general items - The body and structure of the vehicle must not have damage and excess corrosion.
  • Fuel system - The fuel filler cap should be able to fasten securely and there must be no leaks.
  • Seatbelts / SRS - The condition, security and operation of seatbelts will be checked, and compulsory seatbelts must be in place.
  • Steering - The condition of the steering wheel will be checked to make sure it is acceptable, and it should be attached securely to the steering shaft.
  • Suspension - The operational condition of the suspension must be sufficient when checked.
  • Wipers and washers - These will be checked to make sure they do not affect the driver's view of the road.
  • Windscreen - The overall condition of the windscreen will be checked to make sure it does not affect the driver's view of the road.
  • Lights - Required lights must be operational, secure, and in good condition.
  • Electrical wiring & battery
  • Registration plates - This should be present on the vehicle and securely fitted. It should be easily visible, and not obscured, faded or dirty. The lettering must have the correct spacing and be of the approved font design.
  • Bonnet - The catch on the bonnet will be checked to ensure it stays securely latched.
  • Tyres, wheels & TPMS - The size, condition, type and tread depth of the tyres will be checked to ensure they are correct.
  • Brakes and brake fluid - Brakes must meet legal requirements for efficiency, operation, condition and performance when tested.
  • Horn - The volume of the horn should be suitable to be heard by other vehicles and pedestrians.
  • Exhaust system - There should be no serious leaks, and the exhausts must be secure.
  • Exhaust emissions - The requirements for emissions should be met, depending on the fuel type and age of the vehicle.
  • Diesel particulate filter (DPF) tampering
  • Mirrors - The mirrors must be visible from the driver's seat and should be secure. They should be clear and undamaged.
  • Doors - The vehicle's front doors must be able to be opened from both the inside and outside.
  • Seats - Passenger and driver seats must be in a secure and stable upright position.
  • Towbar
  • Boot and tailgate

What Commonly Causes a Car to Fail the MOT Test?

On first-time MOT tests, nearly 2 in 5 fail. This is mostly due to minor faults that could have been fixed before the owner took the vehicle to be tested. Here are 5 of the most common reasons why a car fails its MOT:

  1. Screenwash that hasn't been topped up. This can be resolved in a few minutes, so make sure you don't get caught out.
  2. Dirty or cluttered car. Give your car a quick clean by removing clutter from the boot, and wiping down the windows and mirrors.
  3. Problems with the registration plate. If you have a personalised registration plate, make sure it follows the DVLA rules. Problems with the registration plate can include incorrect typeface or spacing, being dirty, or missing altogether.
  4. Items blocking the driver's view such as stickers. Make sure parking permits or anything else stuck to the windscreen are outside the wipers' sweep area.
  5. Warning lights lit up on the dashboard. If you have a lit-up warning light, make sure you know what it means, and sort out any of the underlying problems before you have your MOT test.

What Happens if My Car Fails its MOT?

If your car fails its MOT, we will give you a VT3O certificate which shows you all of the reasons that your vehicle has failed.

If your car has a dangerous fault, you will need to get it repaired before you can drive it again. We can give you a quote for fixing the issue, and get your car back on the road as soon as possible.

If your car has a major fault, you will only be able to drive it again if it is still roadworthy and your existing MOT has not expired yet.

If your existing MOT has run out and the car is roadworthy, you can drive it to have the faults fixed and to a pre-booked MOT. Alternatively, we can fix any of the issues while your vehicle is with us.

Remember, driving a car without an MOT under any other circumstances, or driving a car with dangerous faults, means you can be fined £2,500, be banned from driving and get three points on your licence.
